Promigas Telecomunicaciones Meets Increasing High-Bandwidth Demands with Network Expansion Using Nortel Carrier Ethernet Solutions

    Thursday, October 25, 2007

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA -- (Marketwire) Promigas Telecomunicaciones, a major supplier of network services for service providers in Colombia, is expanding its current network infrastructure using Nortel's(1) (TSX:NT)(NYSE:NT) Carrier Ethernet solutions. The network expansion allows Promigas Telecomunicaciones to meet increased high-bandwidth demand in the region essential to real-time video, VoIP and streaming media across a variety of devices.

Promigas Telecomunicaciones currently provides metro broadband transport services in four major Colombian cities: Barranquilla, Cali, Cartagena and Bucaramanga. The expansion, based on Carrier Ethernet, positions Promigas Telecomunicaciones for continued growth within Colombia as well as throughout the region. As well as network reliability, the Carrier Ethernet enhancements are delivering scalable, and simple to manage Ethernet transport offerings.

"Promigas Telecomunicaciones helps change the way people do business by incorporating the bandwidth necessary to run voice and multimedia applications over the network that our service provider customers require," said Alfredo Zuniga, chief operating officer, Promigas Telecomunicaciones. "We need a reliable solution that will support these new bandwidth-intensive services. Nortel allows us to operate a network with a simplified infrastructure which helps drive efficiency and enhances services while easily extending capacity to support more customers as we need it."

"With Hyperconnectivity - where everything that can be connected to the network, will be connected - beginning to put staggering loads on current networks, it is important for service providers and their customers to prepare as well as capitalize on its opportunity," said Manuel Terrero, vice president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel Caribbean and Latin America. "Nortel's innovative Carrier Ethernet portfolio gives Promigas Telecomunicaciones increased bandwidth, performance, and cost benefits that help them deliver new high-bandwidth services while also running a smooth, efficient network infrastructure."

This network expansion includes Nortel's Provider Backbone Transport (PBT) technology which allows for point-to-point Ethernet tunnels set up across a metro area. The Carrier Ethernet solution for Promigas Telecomunicaciones is part of Nortel's Metro Ethernet solutions, and includes Nortel's Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600, along with Metro Ethernet Services Unit 1800 and Metro Ethernet Services Unit 1850 all managed by Metro Ethernet Manager, Nortel's operations and management solution for the Metro Ethernet Networks portfolio. These products deliver scalable, feature-rich Ethernet-based VPN's as well as a high-performance infrastructure supporting high-bandwidth services, such as IPTV and mobile video. Additionally, these features provide Gigabit Ethernet performance for business.
