For Immediate Release
NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Bogotá artist Gustavo Gallardo in Figuratively Speaking. The exhibition opened on July 8th, 2016 and runs through July 28th, 2016 with an opening reception on July 14th, from 6 – 8PM. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist
“My sources of inspiration are dreams,” Gustavo Gallardo says, and in his paintings, fantasy and reality meet in settings that, with their winged creatures and seeming multiple exposures, capture the ambiance of dreams while also projecting a strong, immediate physicality.

For Gallardo, sketching is the starting point of every piece. By taking his initial sketches and transferring them to canvas, he brings each one alive in a distinctive way, combining media and approaches to create a diverse body of work with a broad range of colors and moods.
Using acrylics, charcoal, and pastels, Gallardo juxtaposes their textures, balancing drips and strong lines with delicate clouds of color. Particularly good at using well-placed light effects, he gives each painting a sense of movement and depth that pull the viewer into his world. In addition, he sometimes explores the possibilities of digital manipulation, scanning a work and then using the computer to further modify it. That combination further extends the idea of a multi-layered universe that is so central to the power of his images. Gallardo lives and works in Colombia.

About the Exhibition

Figuratively Speaking: Bringing figure and shape into focus

The universal appeal of basic shapes and figures, expressed in images that range from portraits to landscapes to still lifes, is brought into the spotlight in the exhibition Figuratively Speaking. The artists in this show employ a diverse range of approaches and media, using photography and the tools of digital art, as well as oils and acrylics, to illustrate the many forms and meanings that the figure can take. Whether those figures represent people, animals, objects or beings that solely exist in the artist’s imagination, they all bring a strong energy to the paintings or photographs built around them. In abstract and representational settings, they confirm the power that the relationship between figure and background holds. From bright, sharp images in which the subject stands out clearly to moody, densely textured works that put the figure at a tantalizingly remote distance, these artists offer a surprising variety of ways to bring that relationship alive. They all demonstrate how one of art’s basic concepts is always open to new, fresh interpretations.
