Power outages in Brazil

The night the lights went out in Brazil

By Jorge Luis Pardo  Thursday, November 12, 2009

Forty percent of Brazil was plunged into darkness from power outages this week.  Eerie pictures of cities in the dark dominated the Internet.

“Brazil has the largest integrated power grid in the world; it’s fantastic because it facilitates electricity transmission between regions, but the domino effect that happens when we have a problem is a major inconvenience,” said Maurice Tolmasquim, president of Brazil’s beleaguered Energy Research Agency.

Even in torrential rainstorms of late, there have been no power outages in Bogota.

A lucky circumstance when no one wants to be out in the dark at night.
