Colombian Apertura championship

La Equidad Go Top After Narrow Win

By Ontheweb: Gregory Sica  Thursday, May 8, 2008

With only two rounds remaining until the end of the Colombian Apertura championship regular season ten teams are still in the hunt for the final six semifinal spots. This is making the season one of the most exciting in recent years.

La Equidad, who are historically Colombia’s worst team, defeated Envigado FC 1-0, and went top of the standings with 31 points, after Independiente Santa Fe could only afford a 1-1 draw with Deportivo Pereira.

Colombian international Roberto Polo scored La Equidad’s winner. Many expect him to become a star of the future with the national team, as he scored a goal in their recent 5-2 victory over Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Maximiliano Flotta scored for Santa Fe and Johny Acosta scored for Pereira. Both La Equidad and Santa Fe had already qualified for the following round of the competition last week.

Four-time Colombian champions Independiente Medellin climbed to third position on the standings after fighting out a 1-1 draw with Deportivo Cali in a tight contest.

Elkin Calle scored for Medellin, while Cali’s Uruguayan midfielder Javier Delgado leveled the score. Cali only need a victory in their last two matches to reach the semifinal qualification round.

In the other matches America beat Deportes Quindio 3-1, Millonarios defeated Once Caldas 2-0, and Atletico Huila edged Cucuta Deportivo 1-0.

Cucuta Deportivo, who are still alive in the Copa Libertadores, have already been eliminated from the Colombian championship after a disastrous campaign. It seems that they couldn’t cope with the fact that they were participating in two competitions at the same time.
