Different types of laser eye surgery

Basically, there are two different kinds of laser eye surgery:  LASIK and PRK.  Both of these techniques are performed while the patient is awake and numbing drops are used in the eyes. PRK, which is known as photorefractive keratectomy is used to correct farsightedness, mild to moderate nearsightedness and/or astigmatism.

All laser eye surgeries work by reshaping the cornea which is the clear front part of a person’s eye.  Light is then able to travel through the cornea and be properly focused onto the retina which is found in the back of a person’s eye.  In order to reshape the cornea, a number of different surgical procedures are used.  During PRK, the eye surgeon uses a laser in order to reshape the cornea.  This laser is used on the cornea’s surface and not underneath as in LASIK.  This instrument delivers a beam of ultraviolet light which is cool and pulsing.

PKR is very accurate when it comes to correcting nearsightedness.  About 80% of PRK patients wind up with 20/20 vision a year after surgery.  This is without the use of glasses or contact lenses!....more
