State law requires breast exam coverage
By AdminA federal task force’s conclusion that most women in their 40s do not need routine mammograms is not likely to impact whether Michigan health insurers cover the exam.
State law requires all state-regulated insurers to pay for annual breast cancer screenings for women in this age group, regardless of outside recommendations, said Paula Lantz, department chairwoman of health management and policy at University of Michigan’s School of Public Health.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force on Monday said most women don’t need mammograms in their 40s and should get one every two years starting at age 50—a stunning reversal of widely followed guidelines and a break with the American Cancer Society’s long-standing position.
The only exception to the Michigan law, Lantz said, is large self-insured employers such as Ford Motor Co., which pay employee health claims directly rather than through an insurance policy… more
