Beaufort County Health Department and Cancer Society support 34th annual event
By AdminOn November 19, 2009, the Beaufort County Health Department, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will recognize the 34th annual Great American Smokeout. This date is used to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life.
Countless research demonstrates the link between smoking and negative health consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, accounting for approximately one of every five deaths each year. Smoking causes cancers of the bladder, larynx (voice box), pancreas, and stomach, and is responsible for more than 80% of lung cancer deaths. Additionally, smoking causes coronary heart disease, which is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smokers are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than nonsmokers… more
