University of Michigan ready to get embryos for research
By AdminA year after receiving the go-ahead from state voters, University of Michigan officials said Tuesday that they have established procedures to accept donated human embryos that will be used in stem cell research and expect to begin developing new lines of stem cells by mid-2010.
The announcement came just 24 hours before a state Senate committee is scheduled to act on proposed state guidelines for embryonic stem cell research, most of which are opposed by U-M researchers and backers of the 2008 Proposal 2 ballot measure lifting the state’s ban on the destruction of embryos.
