RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras on Friday unveiled a huge share offering which could raise 64 billion dollars to help finance new exploration projects in the country.
Some 2.1 million common shares and 1.5 million preferred shares would be issued to help finance deepwater exploration, the company said in a statement.

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil’s government will charge state oil company Petrobras $8.51 per barrel for crude reserves to be used in a $43 billion oil-for-shares swap, the government and the firm said on Wednesday, a price seen as high that could hit interest in a related share offering.
The government will trade 5 billion barrels of oil for company shares, Finance Minister Guido Mantega said. The transaction will go alongside a stock issue for private shareholders that could raise as much as $25 billion more in cash.

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazilian ruling party candidate Dilma Rousseff opened a 24-percentage point lead over her main presidential rival in an opinion poll on Saturday, staying on course win the October 3 election in the first round.
Career civil servant Rousseff has 51 percent support, against former Sao Paulo state governor Jose Serra’s 27 percent, according to an Ibope survey published in O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.

Brazilians head to the polls on Sunday, October 3, to choose a new president who will lead the country for the next four years. The top contenders are Dilma Rousseff of the Worker’s Party (PT) and José Serra of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB). A third candidate, Marina Silva of the Green Party (PV), trails third in the polls but could be a key player in the likely scenario that neither of the frontrunners wins the requisite 50 percent of ballots in the first round. If necessary, the runoff would be scheduled for October 31.

(CNN)—Brazil formalized its offer of asylum to Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning, state-run media said Tuesday.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had made a previous offer for asylum, raising Ashtiani’s hopes for survival. Brazil’s ambassador in Tehran has now officially made the offer at Iran’s foreign ministry, according to the state-run news service Agencia Brasil.
